weed wiper sponges c dax

im going to have a go at rebuilding a C dax weed wiper ive bought from someone, what's the best solution to replacing the sponges ( ive tried googling to no avail). ive been quoted like 40.00 per sponge section.... which is crazy money for a long length for what i assume is open celled cellulose foam with a length of 10mm pipe with needle holes in inside. what does everyone else use?

Foam pipe insulation with domestic plastic plumbing pipe inside? Do it yourself holes?
Cheap enough to try it anyway.

would that foam ( the grey stuff) allow any fluid to be held id have thought it would shed it. was looking through cleaning catalogues to see if i could buy a long section of floor mop material, but just cant find it.

As I say, give it a try, nothing much to lose testing with water. How about terrycloth wrapped round and secured by farmer's friend. You can see I'm a big spender!
