Welsh farmers to become "Land managers"

Taken from above link-
"The new funding set-up, outlined by the Welsh Government in its “Brexit and our Land” document, proposes to remove all income support from agriculture, with no safety nets."

"The new system will have two elements. The first is the Economic Resilience Scheme, which will provide targeted investments to land managers – and their supply chains – if they can prove a good business case for them.

The second is the Public Goods Scheme, which will pay land managers who deliver farm-specific outcomes such as improving habitats and air quality."

"However RSPB Cymru said the proposals recognised the existing funding regime – the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) – had failed.
Not only was it poor value for taxpayers, the CAP had driven the degradation of our natural environment, said the bird charity, which welcomed the proposals."

Can't help but think that the RSPB have advised them on this decision especially the Land Managers description making sure that they will still receive funding!

So who's paying for all these inspectors to go round then? The problem is the public don't get how scarce food is going to be. Just importing from other countries won't be a viable option going forward. At some point they are going to have to pay the true cost of production and there won't be a cheap way out of it

You don't have to take public money, if you do take it, you have to provide something for it.

Whats the problem with that?
Well....um...err...we are providing food....:cautious::oops:

Thing is, these enviro schemes are complicated, and require a lot of admin. Some schemes are badly thought out too. A simple scheme whereby everyone puts 10% aside for wildlife habitat, and gets paid a flat rate payment for the rest would be OK.

Very little actual detail ATM.

Just had an email from NFU Cymru on this.

This is a bit is a doosy:

WG keen to stress that this is a “consultation” and that they are open to alternative ideas.
  • Whilst there is a chapter on regulation there will be I understand be a separate consultation on regulation alone in the Autumn.

'kin Turkey time .........

It’s been heading this way for a while. If you dont argue your case or at least respond in some way is it surprising that your interests are not met?

Every time there is a consultation paper then engage with it because the RSPB, their members and other more radical elements do. Apathy and democracy are dangerous bedfellows.

Across the border in England we're no different. Read Gove's Health & Harmony document and you'll see how seldom food get mentioned. We're all going to be park keepers/wardens/land managers providing public goods (who may produce some food on the side).

OK, fair enough,I don't mind being a paid park keeper. What I don't like are these half baked schemes like unsprayed sping barley. Rather than grow a 20 acre mixture of weeds and barley, I'd prefer 10 acres of tidy barley, and 10 acres of weeds.
One small question, what exactly is meant by " public goods " ?

And what kind of backward country abandons food production, in favour of wildlife habitat ?

Public goods = public access.

To your last question, this one.

You can grow 10 ac of barley without future support and 10 ac of weeds called a fallow/lapwing plot/AB11 that will probably be paid eventually if you apply for it.

Public goods? Its a long list that doesn't include safe, assured food. Flood mitigation, carbon/nitrogen/phosphate sequestration, pollinator habitat, bird habitat, collective landscape work (clusters), access etc etc

Which country abandons food to market forces? This one.
