Got some barley stubble that im wanting to sow into either westerwolds or italian to grow over winter and cut early before ploughing to put into spring crops again. Which is best for this as in whats best feed value, tonnage, able to deal with a harsh winter if we get it?

Westerwolds ryegrass is known for fast establishment and high tonnage, which could give you a good bulk early on. It’s great for a quick turnaround and can produce a decent cut in early spring. However, it’s a bit less hardy in tough winters compared to Italian ryegrass, so if you’re expecting a harsh winter, it might not be the best bet.
Italian ryegrass tends to be more winter-hardy and can still give you good yields, though it might take a little longer to establish compared to Westerwolds. It usually provides better feed value as well, with a higher protein content and more digestibility, which could be beneficial if you’re using it for feed.I don't want to give advice, just choose what suits you best.
fair advice.
we will be sowing w/w post harvest, to get the cover crop sub, and early silage cut, before maize.

tempted to stitch some into some older pasture as well, its nice and agressive.

Feedback says Westerwolds ever time short term, it will be away quicker and grow faster , price is the same though ,don't mix them the Westerwolds will be up to two weeks earlier than Italian so cutting dates won't match
Italian will be slightly better feed though

For Seed Rate
10 kg acre for winter cover sheep grazing
14 kg if you want to take a good cut in spring
12 Months or longer if Italian then 16 to 18 kg , the higher rate if Tertraploid
