I’m in south of France at moment staying next to this field,

Looks like wheat sown with barley or at least 2 types on barley sown together?

Closer inspection it’s 2 types of barley?

Super tall to🤷🏻‍♂️

Longer must be just shy of 4 ft

Tall stuff will probably be rye, the crop underneath is possibly triticale or a wheat.
Will it be be fed to livestock if that’s the case?

Would come over for some visits to some x pats but I’m well over near alps, think I’m nearly 6 hours from you ☹️

Came over on tunnel this time after years of ferry, so much easier an faster and cheaper!

Mixed Farmer
Mixtures of crops are popular here especially in organic and low input situations. I have heard of up to 6 way mixes that mature at roughly the same time mostly based around wheat, triticale, rye, oats, peas, beans, vetch and lupins. Most of these will be fed on farm but some co-ops will take mixtures and use them in animal feed plants or even separate them out, especially a mix that includes organic milling wheat where the price justifies the cost. Don't ask me how they work out the price I have never done it.

My neighbour has been growing mixes for years and has fine tuned his mix to triticale, oats and forage winter peas. After 5 years in grass and a careful plough he will probably use very little in the way of inputs. This mix is fed to fattening lambs without rolling. I am passing one of his fields later and I'll take a photo. The peas are going mad this year being forage types and we are forecast some thunderstorms next week so it could all end up flat.

Another idea people here are trying is a few rows of sunflowers in their forage maize crops to raise protein levels.

Have missed a year or 2 in France I had forgotten how amazing sone of the farmland is!

Here’s close up how do you tell triticale from barley other than height?
