What GPS system?

What GPS systems are people currently using and what do you think are the pros and cons of them?

I am currently reviewing our farming systems and am eager to implement a GPS system into our operations to help us with guidance/spraying/spreading.

I initially wanted something that would interact with our computer system in the office however on pricing these up seemed way to expensive for our needs so have opted to go for farm plan with the web viewer subscription too.

This brings us onto GPS. I read with interest the FW article on GPS systems. As far as my shortlist goes I had it down to two options - patchwork advance or the avmap farm navigator. Is anyone currently using these? If so what are your thoughts?

At the moment we do not plan to do variable rate applications or auto shut off on the sprayer as our kit is a bit outdated. What I would like is a system that has a manual shut off guide such as the avmap. Do any other systems offer this?

I know there is a lot of questions there any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What are you looking to achieve with it?

Your post may not have recieved many replies as it seems quite vague. Plenty of people have written honest reviews of most types of GPS systems on here if you do a search. That might be your best place to start else you'll get 10 people telling you 10 different things are different.

What is your budget? An idea of what you want to spend to achieve your aims will help significantly. It sounds to me like £1000-2000 basic guidance is probably your mark, but it seems like you did have ideas for a more advanced (and as you found out expensive) system previously.

There are quite a few BB users on here I think. Unsure of anyone using AVMap farm navigator though.

Having read back my post I see what you mean!

Our budget is around £2000. At the moment we are after something that will get us started with GPS. The main purpose is to help with spray/fert applications. The main function I would like it to have on the display is a guide as to when to shut off booms. I know AVMAP offer this, as do BB, I don't know if any others do?

I was just after people's thoughts that was all. The dealer we generally use are trimble sellers but I don't think the EZ250 offers what I want it for.

Biggest suggestion I could give you, taking that there are a lot of systems out there that offer similar features, make sure that you buy from somewhere that will give you good backup, that may be your tractor dealer or may be a specialist guidance dealer. There are a lot of suppliers out there that provide some terrible back up, somethat think farming is a 9 till 5 job, nothing more frustrating than sitting in a field at 5.05 at night when it won't work and phoning up to get an automated answer phone message, especially if it's a Friday evening, and your not going to get any help till the Monday!!

If all you want is basic guidance with a lightbar and a map you won't go wrong with a 250. however it does not really upgrade so if you want to move to auto steering in the future you will be better spending more money on a 750 or another make.

There are many on here that know much more about it than me.

In which case the BlackBox Go! Would be perfect for you plus it is fully upgradable when you decide you need to and comes in well under your budget for the initial purchase.

250 can have auto shut offs and auto steer added as far as I am aware!

Thanks for the replies. @Jim75 I take it you have one for sale?

I was looking at spaldings today and they have the Leica mojo 3d. Does anyone use those. I spoke with Andrew at patchwork last week and he seemed massively helpful.

if you are going to use manual on off then why do you need to use gps

the main benefit for a gps on off for the sprayer or fert spreader is that it is then automatic and the operater concentrates on steering into the tramlines this is most beneficial on gore ends and bouts less than full width

Would have said steering is a big benefit if spraying a lot of grassland
