What happened to stopping for proper meal breaks on farms?
In my grandparents era all the men were fed during harvest and shearing nowadays no one seems bothered.
Sad I think as it was a social gathering around the table after harvest.

I always think that. I miss mother coming across the fields in her old lada with tea and cakes during harvest/moving little bales etc.

Due to the fact that I am still selling pigs and wheat for the same price as I did 40 years ago and have a quarter of the men to do it with (at 20 times the wages) there is no time or money for picnics around here.

Good call @Kevtherev we do get look after but it mainly when we are chopping

Dunno ... we give our staff breakfast after the morning routine as its a good way to sketch out the day's work.
Lunch they are on their own though

Nobody has the time to stop in this modern world, always trying to beat the weather, also a lot of farmers now the "woman of the house" works out.

Silage gang always come in for dinner here, used to be for all meals but there seems more need to push on nowadays. Although maize harvest it's often supper rather than dinner, better to work on in daylight and sit at the table in the dark.
Don't think they go in for food at many places now but the lads who work for the contractor will do just about anything for me. Not sure if it's because they feel appreciated or wether they're just good blokes.

You're not writing that properly, you should of said your progressive and forward thinking and more efficient. That's why you need less men etc. Haha

I was thinking how old fashioned I was yesterday while ploughing. I had the back window open and even stopped for a cup of tea and sandwich.

We are the only staff.
Christmas work do is cheap enough !

I can say that the farm in the next village stop for breakfast and dinner ,what ever they are doing ,,last couple of years when Ive been with them on spud job ,the manager goes home for his meals and the staff come back to the yard for grub and the loo (female staff on the harvester )

If we're working near the house / yard we'll have a cuppa mid morning and mid afternoon and lunch around 12.30 /1pm. Unfortunately these days it's packed lunch and eating on the go most days. In my mother's day we had to be in for meals at 10am, 12.30pm and 4pm on the dot. And supper was at 7pm come hell or high water!

Maybe with modern machinery having self lube systems and sensors everywhere has stopped having to lift guards every so often to poke about and see if anything has dropped of resulting in not stopping for a meal break
