What happens if...

What happens if I drill winter wheat in the spring?

I'm assuming the world won't implode and I am also assuming it's less than ideal however, will I have a combinable crop?

I have extase wheat here that I would like to have seed treated and then plant in mid april next year

I keep having texts come through saying spring corn seed is in very short supply and therefore it's going to be expensive.

I've got 50 acres i want planted next year after an early cut of grass at the beginning of April (give or take 7-10 days from the 10th) and then the corn would be planted around the 20th of April (again give or take 7-10 days)...

Will I get 2 tonne of wheat to the acre and a half decent crop of straw?

What would be the financial benefit of buying proper spring corn seed instead?

Thanks

Edit: It is to feed to my cows, it is not to make into bread or beer if that makes a difference

I’m afraid it needs vernalisation, and so if drilled in April it won’t produce a seed head. You will just have an expensive crop of vegetation . Some varieties you might get away with drilling in March if we had a cold enough spell

I’m clueless on varieties but winter wheat generally needs a cold spell for vernalisation. How much & how long I guess would depend on variety
Ahh so in a word "no"...

Thanks and bugger

Anyone know where to get cheap good quality spring corn seed?

Vernalisation is a spell of cold temperatures after germination that triggers the plant to enter the reproduction phase. Plant Extase in April and you will get a lush grass but no seed.

If it's just for feed, try a blend of peas and spring barley if it's forage you want, otherwise just spring barley

Thanks everyone but I won't be doing it... I've booked up 4t of spring barley, variety is called diablo
Any good?

No price yet but looking at £530/t, how does that sound to everyone?

If I get my wheat dressed now, will it keep until autumn next year to save me paying for seed next autumn?

Seed will keep alright , I was hoping to get spring seed for under £500 but haven’t got a definite price yet
