What is it about farmers.......

It's the shear variety of people and experience/expertise on here as well as the humour, willingness to help and listen even if they do tell you you being a prat (maybe not in so many words:LOL:). You lot have seen me through some pretty shitty times, don't honestly think there's anyone on here I wouldn't share a pint with.

I'm now almost completely retired from peasantry ("maybe next year Rodney") after a lifetime of livestock farming. Now I just potter about trying to turn a reasonably large plot of swamp into a productive veg garden. I'd never really tried growing veg before so apart from a bit of book learning at ag. college it's been a steep learning curve though a surprising amount of my skills have been transferable.

Right, I'm just off to dag some carrots and halter train a couple of cabbages

I know some like to argue the point and say no, it's a business, but farming for most is a way of life. Tired old cliche perhaps but explains why we come on here, and many are happy to talk shop whenever out socially too.

That's not to say we don't need an interest outside the farm though.
Thats the reason, I am interested in the arable folk worried about the rain, in what we would consider a drought and the arable guys like to laugh at us poor hill folk!

I think this is true for a lot of us, it's a way of life, a passion, not just a career or even worse, 'just a job'. I think of those poor saps sitting in offices in towns and cities day in, day out (i am just on the verge of full escape from that life)

it gets better or worse @yellowbelly ....sunday was the day before the wife's and my birthday (we share the same birthday)....so with 'clans descending the next evening we decided to have a quiet curry takeout the sunday night....lamb bhuna...lovely(y)

next morning ,monday, our birthday, i got up early to look round sheep before birthday breakfast prepared by daughters at about 9:30(y).....everthing was fine until i got to off lying land and found the electric fence down:banghead:......the 'excersize' repairing it started a little 'peristalsis'....ghandi wanted his revenge:eek:.....realising i wouldn't make it home:banghead:......i found a furrow other side of fence on grass margin next some arable...:poop:....covering my shame in grass + soil....i hurried home to shower:eek: .....
......but there's more:rolleyes:.....the next day whilst checking my repair...i was flagged down by a tractor driver cultivating the next field....'come look at this' he said ....you can guess what he showed me....'look at the grass pushed over it...i reckon big cat did that'....i wanted to say 'looks more like bear'....but i stayed quiet....'you better watch your sheep he warned'.....needless to say i changed the subject and we went about our work:)
