What is your soil?

Never been on this bit of the forum before, so I hope this is the right place for this. I came across this map thingy and thought it may be interesting to some on here...

My eldest daughter is a soil scientist ,,,,,, when she was studying for her Masters at Cranfield she brought some old soil type maps home , I was amazed how accurate they were

Lime green - wet rubbish...

Everything - shallow peat, deep peat, shallow clay loam, deep clay loam, rab/shillett, gravel, boulder clay, free-draining, poorly-draining, non-draining.

But no limestone.

Drat.

No.8 "Free draining slightly acid loamy soil" and No.12 "Freely draining floodplain soils" I'd say they're bang on there with our red sandstone.

got the soil survey and their use England and wales soil survey with a map of eastern England
very accurate
use it when land comes up to see what the soil types are very usefull saves a lot of leg work and digging

Can also overlay this data in DEFRA Magic Map - most things in one place if having a nose about using that...

How do you work out which soil series you are? Not the No 1-25 etc but the series names, like Hanslope etc?

I have pingo land, or hydrolaccolith if you like. Ice age deposits that sort of corrugate the land. Such lovely pingo that they are in text books! They dont drain though. I have a deep bog that is a foot from a fast flowing stream but it does not drain into it as there is a line of clay between the two.
If I jump in one corner of the field, you can see the other corner wobble.
