Didn't get anything drilled as got land ready but held off last minute due to massive amount of rain forecast. (Mid Oct) since then got lakes of water stood on plough / pressing or sumo'ing.
Can't even walk across fields so currently 100%. (Need option in poll) At least I still have seed in shed and don't have to look at a flooded mess of a crop!!
210mm rain so far for October.

there will surely be too much malting SB next year then?
There will be certainly more Barley around, how much heavier land makes malting will be season specific
I’ve fixed what I think is a decent Malting premium on 20% of my expected SB tonnage this week to manage some of that risk

Here 100% sown, 15% still emerging needs some dry as saturated ,10% almost full rows not the best think some will not make it , 70% all up and surviving looking ok 4% struggling 1/2% under a lake and1/2 not there slugs or flea beetle .

Everything sown as planned.
Usual wet areas will not make it, but 4 out 5 years they never amount to much anyway.
As usual with osr - a few bare patches showing up.
So all the usual bits missing.
However I have 40 acres of ww after osr and cannot get pellets on. Looked to be safe enough under a decent seedbed, but I am now worried as will begin to emerge.
Just never stops raining.......

It is all pretty soul destroying.
If it isn’t the constant wet, it’s the pre-ems that are now doing a lot of damage to the germinated crops.

On top of which, part of my grain store has flooded twice in the past week. Thought we’d cured the problem only to find it flooded again this morning after last nights further inch in a hurry.
Fortunately called in some help to sweep it all out again and that side of the shed is empty of grain
We now know what the problem was and hope we have properly fixed it this time.
And the floor had dried up pretty well this afternoon. But it all just add to the total misery and worry.
Especially as it is our Assurance Inspection tomorrow!

The MD of this estate died last week. It was expected, but nonetheless it all adds to general malaise, of this year and the farm in general.

I can only console myself by realising that I have done my absolute best and given the same circumstances would still have done it just the same. And I’m sure I’m not the only one in this situation.

I hoping to get another 15% of the planned Winter Beans planted, but 20% of the planned acreage will not be able to be planted.
Goodness knows how much of the cereals will have to be replanted in the Spring.

I just wish something would start to go right for a change!

‘23 has certainly been a constant sh•t storm
The contrast with ‘22 couldn’t be greater
I’m in an alright position on favourable chalk but there are very few people in a good position and it’s been a constant drain
Let’s hope ‘24 is better, needs to be

Shockingly wet here. And another 40mm forecast this week. SFI will be taking a major part of the acreage from now on. Just too much risk for too little (if any) reward.

Looking at the poll
40% have more than 20%. Say average 30% of area
60% less than 20 % say 10% of area
rough average 18 %

the estimated area of wheat for 2024 was 1.75 million ha so 300 thousand acres less
so total wheat area 1.45 million ha
at average 8 TPer ha 11.6 million tonnes max
or 7 t per ha 10.15 million tonnes

with this years harvest likely to leave no carryover the uk will have a big import need
in 2020 we had a low harvest but 2019 was very big and still imported record amounts

This could do with a care emoji, just keep reminding yourself you have done your best and you can't do better than that.

I haven't done the poll, OSR all written off, but replaced with Winter beans which are now sat in a quagmire. Only time will tell if they emerge, all the wheat is out of the ground, and should be ok, whether some will need killing off I won't know until spring.
