It would probably kill you if you ate enough, but the same applies to most things to a degree

The bay laurel isn't toxic. It's Laurus Nobilis.
The cherry or common laurel that is seen in shrub hedges and woods etc, is totally toxic, including when being burnt. It's Prunus Laurocerasus.
