I drilled 15 acres at the end of March obviously went very dry hardly grown looked properly today not vernalised it was a gamble but now I know. Variety Gleam.

Where in the country

North Warwickshire. It had cold weather but I think the biggest factor was it was so dry to start with it didn’t germinate hence no chance to vernalise.

I can't bring myself to like your post, but thank you for reporting it. There were a lot of posts about how late it was possible to sow wheat back in March.

How do you know it hasn’t vernalised

A crop that hasn't vernalised won't produce any kind of seed head or flower. For grasses, like modern cereals, they just sit there looking like grass.

it has the flag leaf coming out it’s about 3 inches tall. Dissected it and no grain ear. Hey ho always next year.

Cut and Bale for Forage!! If grass ect. is short someone might value it as feed.

My Jan and Feb drillings are only just poking the ears out now.
Must say it's been a relief to see it start, for ages it looked rubbish, but actually now I think it's probably got better potential than a lot of later planted spring wheat due to the droughty weather.

Someone local took on some ground( rented) at Christmas and decided to drill wheat early March, around 80 acs. It looks ok from road but must have a look to see if it's got an ear or not . Will be expensive mistake if not .

It’s just going to be topped to take any tall weeds off then sprayed and drill use as cover crop. It was a gamble I lost.
