when a new engine is rated at 5.88 kw what does it mean??

I am looking at buying a new Chinese engine which is rated at 5.88kw
I have looked online and it converts to 7.88hp but what does it mean? is it 7.88hp max hp??

The 5.88kW or 7.88hp is the maximum that the engine will deliver. The manufacturer should state the speed at which it produces this power and probably the maximum torque of the engine as well. The maximum torque may not be at the same engine speed as the maximum power. Changing pulley ratios will give you different speeds and torques at the machine the engine is driving but it won't change the amount of power that the engine produces. If you halve the speed, you will almost double the torque, but the power will be the same, less a small %age for friction losses in the belt drive.

Max output at a given engine rev.

Just used as a standard to compare against, if it was listed as a 3kW you'd know it was going to struggle.
But only if you're using all the power you originally had.

This man knows more than I will ever

Depends on the manufacturer, the measurement method and how optimistic they are!! Typically with small petrol engines, they will quote the highest possible figure, so max power at full revs. In reality a standard engine, without any tweaks, will produce far more conservative power figures. So you may as well err on the side of caution with power outputs.
I forgot to say that the engine speed will be reduced by 50% by fitting bigger pulley on second shaft , does this mean power will be doubled?
As said both output speed and torque (but not power) will be increased/decreased by the ratio of the driven and driving pulley diameters - or if it was gear/chain driven by the number of teeth on the driven and driving gears.

Just the wrong supplier, you'll find the same on E-Bay or the like as a single unit?
Keep away from Alibaba for one offs ........... :hungover:

5.88 is 7.99 metric hp.

There are other readings of hp, but I’ve always used metric as it seems to tally with engines in tractors and telehandlers where the hp is given in kW or hp!
