I have an International B250 tractor (1958) About to do an oil change and go buy oil, the book says SAE 20 oil, but when I go to the shop they always debate about this and offer me alternatives because they don't seem to stock that. So what equivalent modern oil would be ok to use?

why not put in it the same stuff you put in it last time

old engines that have been run on non detergent oils suffer sludge build up due to the lack of cleaning properties in the oil

put a modern sythetic detergent oil in an old engine whats been run on non detergent and it will dislodge all the crap ahd shite thats acumulated over time, blocking the filter or even worse the strainer in the sump, which then starves the pump and seizes the engine

if you have been using a "modern" oil in it however, it will be reasonably clean inside, and 15/40 universal farm oil should do just fine

valve grinding paste is far more effective in such situations :) 1 tub straight down the oil filler and let it do its work
Dad told me about a U class submarine that came out of a British shipyard sabotaged in that manner. It was sent straight out to the Med after trials and spent most of its time tied up having the engines repaired yet again.

We have a High Hours David Brown, which we used to put Castrol Multi Use in (20-30) as recommended by the book and dealer. Never any problems.

MU became obsolete, and we started putting 15-40 in't engine, was with all other engines.

The engine transformed, heavy breathing, poor starting, yet more leaking etc etc.

Found some 20-30 low detergent oil, and still use it to this day, without problems.

Many poo poo this, but this is just what we experienced.

cant remember last time i see 20-30 in bulk, can get a 5lt can from the garage, but thats about it, here, everything gets 15-40, all the engines, all the gearboxes, apart from the 990 which runs on EP90 to quieten the rattle down. Even the combine hydraulics run on 15-40!!!

did have a dexta here with a worn engine what was struggling to put the oil pressure light out, we flushed it out and filled it with sae 50, hasnt been spot of bother since
