Which to choose woodland or meadow/open land in terms of having stuff to do - hobby and such?

Just talking a couple of acres, 1 to 5.

I vacillate between the two in terms of which I want to buy.

An established woodland offers more privacy from the getgo but I feel apart from a bit of trimming here and there and once the initial hedging was done I wouldn't have much to do. Also if I want to clear some for crop growing, which is what I am more interested in, would it be cumbersome or costly?

With a meadow or open land however I feel that is more of a tabula rasa and then I could create some woodland and otherwise make crops with the rest.

I feel making crops I would have much more to work on, growing domestic vegetables to begin or even trying my hand with hyproponics and solar energy for more exotic crops.

With the woodland I thought I could make clearings but is that difficult? Does it depend on the tree type? I imagine it could get expensive if having to call in diggers to do the job for me. One I have had my eye on has a lot of ancient wood such as oak but under the canopy it is pretty clear. There was space up the top of the slope for clearing the smaller trees to make crops but still there is a large canopy from the oak giving only partial, dappled, sunlight.

I would say crop growing interests me most but I am also interested in the woodland side. The crop growing I want to take as a long term project for self sufficiency. The woodland stuff, while a useful skill, I feel is more of a side interest. Also simply because i have some existing experience with vegetable gardening, from previous work and would like to try my hand on my own.

So the choices are either start with nothing and plant some woodlands leaving most for crop growing or start with established woodland and clear some for crop growing. Which would be advised given that the crop growing would be the main interest? Having said that if something were ideal in every other aspect - location, price etc. then I would work with that given how difficult it has been to find places which tick the main boxes.

Yeah screw the woodland I would say some open land would be much more fun, as you can decide what to grow and what to do and like you said you could have a mix of woodland and crops. Not much you can do with established woodland apart from chop things up/ clear dead wood.

You need a mix.

Or whatever you can find to buy.

You would need a felling license if you wanted to clear trees to grow stuff, although I suppose you could do a bit on the quiet and hope no one noticed.
A clear field on the other hand you could do what you like with, including planting trees on some of it

Not only that, might even get grants for doing the tree planting.
