I googled that ..... unbelievable character!!!!

Yeah, so did I.
Being a bit of a heathen, I've never had much involvement with poetry since they stopped reading me nursery rhymes.

Never seen such a long entry in Wikipedia.

I'm guessing that statue in Hull and that flagstone in Poet's Corner will be need to be under armed guard anytime soon.

They even erected the statue after he called the town crapulous.

Sod that, the git also wrote 'The Whitsun Weddings' which is sh!te and I had to do it for O-Level English.
I seemed to miss him in schools English, but did put up with some Betjeman,Under Milk Wood, and Silas Marner. Not too bad looking back. One of his poems,"Show Saturday" is a small Agricultural village show not far from me.Still going strong.Although his poem seems more a description of it than a poem.Wondered who the bald fella was scribbling prose down in his notebook in 1973.......

I love books, I started reading seriously as I spent a lot of time in hospital as a lad and there was nothing else to do. By the time I was 11 I had already started on Russian classics, to the horror of the local librarian , who felt I should be in the childrens section not carting home huge tomes.
it was a given that English Lit would be number one on my choices at school, however the dire drivel we were given to learn put me off Shakespeare , Byron Wordsworth for life .
I had not read any Pulman till I saw this yesterday and did a quick read up on him. He re emphasised my belief that the English literature courses then and now, are intent on ensuring that the hoi poloi stay firmly in there place!
There is an intense arrogance surrounding many of the intellectual left, that they are the creme de la creme and anything they say is correct and nothing they do is wrong.

“How to win the Next Election” dates from 1966, and so is presumably written in the Conservative cause. It goes:

Prison for strikers,
Bring back the cat,
Kick out the ni**ers,
How about that?

Trade with the Empire,
Ban the Obscene,
Lock up the Commies,
God Save the Queen.

Whilst it was written tong in cheek, I think the worrying thing is to many it still rings true, half a century later. Even on this forum everyone of those sentiments is frequently trotted out in one form or another. And a lot of extra verses could now be easily added..

Never understood the hyperbole over shakespeare. But I guess it keeps a lot of very useless people employed.

I found the library via Andre Norton - science fiction & fantasy remains my entertainment mixed with various aspects of science as my hobby .. not into any of this fake intellectual BS .. can't stand poetry.

We had to do "Cry the beloved country" at "O" level which I couldn't stand .. but typical Left wing BS material.

I think he was one of those many left wing intellectuals who at heart are deeply hypocritical. They espouse one thing but believe completely different . It is apparent from his letters published afterhis death that he portrayed many faces to different people., many were shocked to discover his duplicity.
But hey ho, he was a good old left winger and all is forgiven, it was only his little joke, not like those nasty racists on the right.

Just because you don't understand it, it doesn't mean it's BS to everyone else.
