Why is the Environment Agency so against cleaning, maintaining UK rivers??

plus, if the "spoil" you dredge out is contaminated (which is probably is), then it needs to go to landfill, so a very high cost, hence no dredging.
Dredged material out of rivers and brooks is potent fert although im not a big fan of dredging rivers, i think rivers would mostly flush themselves clean and clear if banks were cut back and drift wood cleared.

The spoil doesn't need to go to landfill, it never used to.
There's a reason the most fertile areas of land either are/were flood plain.
As to why the ea do f all anymore I think it's down to responsibility. If they dredge rivers repair damage to banks etc it'll not only cost money but it will also make them liable for any further work needed along with any effect on wildlife. Easiest to do f all let "nature" do it's thing and sit back when it all goes wrong and say well that's what nature intended.

Because it costs nothing to do nothing

Same as the roads & Sewage Plants - do nothing, take the money, increase the pensions & bonuses, get a better car and go do some side work to get even more money

The mugs will just keep paying regardless

If you are in doubt go look at an EA car park - might also see the Diesel Generators charging the EV cars
having watched how they" work " - I wouldnt be so sure about the first bit

Whoever owns the land has the power, twas always thus.
The state bureaucracy tail has been allowed to wag the dog in this country for too long.
Nothing will change until they are told what needs to change........everyone should remember these organisations are meant to work for us - the tax payer.
The EA/SEPA are badly broken, you only have to read the amount of flooding & water issue related posts countrywide on TFF for this to be confirmed, they are complicit in flooding, ecological damage & destruction of property countrywide, for how much longer they think they can get away with this without accountability I do not know though the general feeling seems to be it is now time for a sweeping change.
Waterway management should only ever be a landowner matter not a pigeon holed side show civil service matter

Fortunately its election time

What would it be contaminated with though? If something bad then whole waterway is contaminated too,,,,, council up here have been known to play that card as well to get out of cleaning roadside ditches
Apart from decades of industrial pollution, there are particles from tyres and brakes. Interesting, electric cars being heavier, give 20% more pollution!

I just watched this this morning and I nearly spat my coffee out. He started putting the onus on farmers to manage water ways… I recall last time someone made a good job of that they sent him to prison! You couldn’t make it up
I think what he means is, farmers can ask but will be told no. But when there's work to be done, farmers will pay for it. And for it to be done to their ludicrous spec.

I've mentioned in several of these posts before. The Dutch civil engineering project called "Room for the River" The Dutch have a great can do attitude.

He's on nigh on £150k a year and 30.3% employers pension contribution, so he's going to be well cossetted by the taxpayer for sure when he goes. Mind you I doubt he'll retire fully, he also happens to be a senior director at SIG Plc and can't see him giving that gig up*.

*Given what SIG Plc's business is, you can see why he'd want to direct attention away from the massively detrimental effects of new housing developments onto others, such as farmers...
