Will inter-cropping change the face of modern farms?

Inter-cropping (and its parent, polyculture) have begun to show some promise. Farmers are increasing yields, reducing water usage, and limiting profit margin volatility. However, there are multiple drawbacks, including the increased complexity of these systems and the need for different machinery. What are your thoughts?

If you're super interested in this topic, I want to hear your opinion. I'm working on a school project to investigate farmer adoption of this technology.

1m wide robots will sort it all out. A field of corn may be a field of 5 crops.
There was a thread on robot crop establishment and pest control a few months ago.

No, lot of faff for cheapo broadacre crops, but more potential for fruit and vegetable production.

As @Nearly says it will take robots to make it a reality. The theory makes a lot of sense, but until it is tried in practice we won’t know how the theory will collide with reality
