Will your kids take over.

Part of the problem is that career success is generally measured by how much money you earn. I would hope that my daughter will measure success in terms of health and happiness and what she can do for others rather than comparing her car or whatever is the trendy consumable item of the day to that of her friends.

Its a lot easier to be healthy and happier with a bit of wealth though. As a side point I don't think its consumables etc that will soak up the generations cash as they are (relatively) quite cheap its mortgages, tax, fuel and climate change costs!

Both mine, son and daughter say they want to but they're still very young, I see no reason why not and hope they both do but we've diversified massively and don't just 'farm' in the traditional sense, that was unappealing to me anyway, hence the diversification. Happiness is more important than chasing £ (there's a balance obviously) and my 2 seem to get that already. I'm in my 40s and have too many pals who chased the career dream only to now be stuck earning big £ but under immense pressure and utterly loathing their lives.

Agreed!! Out of interest - What are the big ££ jobs/careers that your friends are loathing?! It’s good to know these things to tell the kids ‘avoid avoid!!’ 😆

It is interesting all this in that all our circumstances are different and can present different things at different times to family members.
Currently in my late mid 40s and my kids are not interested to any extent. No 1 is off studying medicine, she like the benefits of my family business and where we live and the people from different circles that we meet, but I do not see it pulling her back, more offering opportunities and experiences.
No 2 has no real idea what he wishes to do and has nothing that positive to say about where we live.
I do not expect either to return to the farm to work, but possibly to hold capital in the longterm.

All this does of course influence my own direction in the industry. I am not bothered about expansion that would simply lead to more work, but at the same time as part of a reasonable sized good positioned partnership I do not desire to be a anchor on the enterprise overall.

Nephew might though.

Dose any farmer know know someone who has a good paying job and likes it ? 😂. Self gratification pretend everyone else is more miserable 😂
I think that kicks in when they hit 50 and start dreaming of retirement
Do all farmers like their job underpaid and overworked at least only answer to yourself

True, but a very large section of western society measure their success by the price of things they consume, cars, houses, clothes, holidays, digital devices etc etc. They don’t bring you happiness.

For those of you not passing the job on to your children, will you sell up at retirement or carry on maybe renting the place out?
I bet a large number of those who say they don't want to take over, still have their eye on the place when you're gone.
we sold ours, have a run past now and again to reassure myself that we made a better job than the ones who have run it since.

I always found aspiring was more fun than achieved , once you have achieved its boring 😂

I used to do a bit of work with a chap called Ian Gregg - he was the mastermind behind Greggs bakers and on the times rich list for several years - not that you would know by looking at him, anyway one if his favourite sayings was ‘success is a journey not a destination’.
