Rafter wind bracing , as steel is good in compression and extension could it be replaced with wire cable but doubled up connecting ridge to posts in reverse.

Yes, the same principle as what you are talking about is regularly used in cavity walls by using flat plate bracing. You need some method of tensioning it in place though
Yes, was snagging two buildings over 20 years ago, and the bracing was just long threaded bar, meeting in the centre of each bay in an 'X'. Tricky to put up with four floppy bits until it was tensioned, but the buildings are still standing. Orchard Way, Sutton in Ashfield.
Just remember the "triangle of forces" or the bracing could have the opposite of the desired effect! Bracing need to apply forces in opposite directions so you end up with zero movement if you understand me! Stating the obvious, I know, but I don't know you!
