Wind & temperature data loggers

I need to scope out potential sites for a vineyard. We've found a couple of fields but really need better local weather data. Something that will record wind speed & temperatures & I can come and download the data occasionally. No mobile or wifi reception at these sites, so transmitting is out of the question.

Any small weather stations that might be worth looking at?

What do you use at the main field trial sites like Sutton Scotney @Fromebridge ?

A look around the net suggests you can get a wind speed (not necessarily direction too) monitor for £2-300.
I use Lascar usb dataloggers for temperature. They are good but you do need to plug them into usb to download the data. You either need to have a spare so you can swap them over or buy a data pad that can download the data on site. I got a pad cheap off ebay and they are very good, means the data is taken there and then and datalogger reset in the field.

In the old days when they were choosing a site for a house they used to put up strips of cloth for a year, then built in the place with the least tattered 'flags'

Thank you. Can you give me an idea of names etc for the wind loggers please? I'll have a look for Lascar.

I found "Agri Tech" Bedford very helpful when choosing a weather station, they specialise in Agri Meterological data equipment and consultancy. They may have some suggestions.

A vineyard? Are you brexit proofing the business, hoping there will be import tariffs on wine and the UK wine industry booms? P.s. I am happy to relocate to become your chief taster.

Tattinger have bought a farm in Kent for producing Champagne here - there's the same seam of soil in Hants/Sussex/Kent as that in Champagne region. Climate Change? Bring it on!

For Tattinger to invest so heavily ,they must have a lot of confidence in that site. I believe they are hoping to produce sparkling wine as opposed to actual Champagne, I like both (y)(y).

Depends on budget and precision you want. Campbell scientific is perhaps the high end and can do anything. Davis weather represent good mid range but gets expensive if looking for remote data collection. Smaller loggers such as logic energy are a good shout. Key to your work though is correlating local data to longer term trends I would suggest. Key things to think of - location, exposure, height of instruments of ground etc. To add to your spec include a solar measurement and rain gauge .
