My 2016 windows 10 laptop is taking a good 10 minute to get to the password screen. Once logged in it runs perfectly.

I have tried a few things

disable fast startup
The bare minimum of programs start at startup
Clear the cache

I have approx 100gb free on the hard drive

any ideas

Try starting it in safe mode and running the repair option. It may find something and sort it.
Could also try looking in task schedular and see if there is anything running on startup that is slowing down the boot process. An anti virus scan as well wouldn't hurt.
tried the repair this evening, no improvement

Is there any diagnostic tools for registry repair ?

You could try the registry cleaning on ccleaner https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner . Go for the free version.

It does give you the option to backup the registry before any changes are made, I recommend you do this.
Note that registry cleaning is a bit 'snake oil' and rarely fixes these kind of problems, but as long as you make the recommended backup, it can't hurt to try.

May be worth doing a search for windows 10 startup issues. I found the following that may or may not help.

Something else worth trying is running a disk check. Failing hard drives can cause all sorts of strange problems that manifest themselves in different ways until the inevitable failure happens.

If none of the above makes any difference it may be simpler to just reinstall windows. You need to back up your data first.

W10 has booted up with the same speed for me it always has. It's most unusual for Windows 10 boot slowly.

Does W10 still have the 'restore' feature? If so, I would restore to a point where it was known to work normally.

I've got W7 on a Bootcamp partition on my iMac and I can't do anything much with it before it crashes. Tried backing up files that I transferred from a laptop but it crashes every time before completion. It can no longer find the wireless router either, so no getting help on-line. This is why I hate Windows.
Nevertheless I have a new computer on order with pre-installed W10 on a partition on its 2TB SSD drive. Hope to have better luck with that.
In the meantime I'll be manually copying files from W7 to an external drive and will upload to the new computer once it arrives. Probably to the OSX partition rather than to Windows.

So why bother with W10? Because I like to keep up with how stuff works. I actually liked Windows and prefered its ordered file structure to OSX, when it didn't crash and burn.

much better after CC cleaner, ~5mins, which is still slow thanks for all the advice

What anti virus have you got installed? Ive seen this very slow boot time where more than one security suite is installed and they conflict. Win 10's OWN BUILT in av is more than sufficient!!!!

What spec is the laptop / age ??
