Windows Live Mail won't send emails. Error message

I had this problem ages ago and can't remember how I resolved it. I seem to get emails coming in but it won't send them out. This is on a Windows PC. I've checked the BT.com website and it seems to be capable of sending and receiving, so it seems related to Window Live Mail itself?

I'm minded of Kevin Bridges sketch when the boys came back fo a beer and someone messed with his SMPT Client account or whatever it was

Error message I get is:

The connection to the server has failed.

Subject 'Re: ................
Server: 'mail.btinternet.com'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0E
Protocol: SMTP
Port: 25
Secure(SSL): No
Socket Error: 10013

Any ideas?

Some info here...

It may be of help.

Then again, it may not.

Your SMTP settings are incorrect, they will need to be changed in account settings. Pulled from the BT site (https://www.bt.com/help/email/manag...gs-for-outgoing-and-incoming-bt-email-servers)

SMTP settings

Outgoing Mail Server: mail.btinternet.com
Port: 465 (this may not be automatically populated on selecting SSL, so you'll need to check)
SSL Encryption: Enabled (but not STARTTLS)
Authentication: PLAIN
Username: your email address including the @btinternet or @btopenworld.com part
Password: your btinternet or btopenworld password

Thanks.
I've tried that and it hasn't worked.

I'm assuming that the Port 25 that mine was set at was automatically populated and so wasn't actually causing a problem anyway.

Changing it to 465 has made no difference.

Do BT also supply your broadband or are you with a different provider?

I have read a few posts on the BT business community that suggest email needs to be routed through your ISP smtp server (but will still appear to the receiver as from [username]@btinternet.com)

Thanks for trying. This seems to be the common answer to be found on tinternet. Doesn't work for me sadly.

I've ended up going for the (possibly) nuclear option 4. Remove and re-add account.
Had that sinking feeling in my heart as all my emails and email folders disappeared...

Re-added account and (phew!!) emails are repopulating. Folders gone though sadly but could've been worse.
Not sure it's actually solved the sending emails problem as yet as it's downloading a few thousand incoming emails currently

Update today.
If only I'd seen this website yesterday I'd have avoided all this loss of data. Answer from 2013 but actually worked for me.

None of the IT websites (inc Microsoft's) had mentioned changing outgoing port to 587. That has made the difference. BT were useless too, just said I had to start paying a monthly fee but that might not resolve the problem anyway, grrrrr.

Question still remains as to who TF or what changed the outgoing post number in the first place, or why 25 no longer worked. Utterly bizarre. I am Kevin Bridges.

All my email folders have gone when I removed the account in desperation, as have all my sent emails etc.

Doh, its a shame they didnt list the correct port on their website. I did read about port 587 being used too. Although all folders have been removed, are they still on the website? If you get what i mean.. could you login to check the webmail? Im sure there would be a way to force windows live mail to redownload the sent emails if they are still in the mailbox

Cheers.
No mention of 587 on the BT website you directed me to. I tried the other port numbers but they didn't help.
BT webmail does indeed have lots of sent emails so they're still available to someone that knows what they're doing. Not sure how to force them onto my machine though, any ideas?

One thing I have noticed is that when you're in Advanced Porperties, if you unclick the "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" box for incoming emails it self alters to 110, which is what mine was originally set at. Ticking it changes it to 995.

Similarly, unticking that box for outgoing changes it to 25, which is what my machine was set at originally. Ticking it changes it to 25 too, which is weird, given the behaviour of the incoming settings. But if you change the setting to 587 and click Apply it saves 587, whether it's ticked or not. It seems to want to force 25 onto you whichever way you do it.

I'm obv well out of my comfort zone here. Me and Kevin.
