Winter 1981

Brings me to thinking how would we cope with a 81 today when all milk is trucked out of the area
In 81 I made a B line to our local Creamery , digging snow for 22 hours a day, my mate digging from the other end. It's hard work clearing 10 ft of snow even with a big Drott , but we got it done, with no loss if milk ,

The winter of 85-86 hasn’t been mentioned yet. Was on my sandwich year near Telford in Shropshire sharing a house with 3 Harper students. It didn’t thaw at all through February, dropping down to the minus 20’s if I remember correctly. No central heating, we used to open the fridge door to warm up the kitchen.
I was at Bicton college in Devon at the same time - 84/85 was pretty bleak too
The 3 acre lake in front of the big house froze over and we were able to walk on it - one lad even took his Mini on it and drove on the ice
Snow was on the ground from Christmas all through January in ‘86 and into ‘87

I don't remember 1981 as my birth year was only half way there, but I do remember 2010. Turning the volume off on my Nintendo DS to try and save juice as it was off for some time. Our car never moved in over a fortnight. I remember my dad and grandpa digging sheep out from dyke backs as well.

I also remember a car getting stuck down the road from us. My dad's pal and his wife were thru staying with us for a few days and he thought he'd rescue it with his defender... Not long afterwards here he comes up the road, car towed by the defender which itself was then being towed by my dad in the Sanderson 😂

One of the main reasons for putting in the log burner in our conversion is just in case we lose power, we are in a fairly built up area but even a couple of hours without power at minus 15 would make it pretty cold and my Mrs isn't a happy bunny when cold.
I still have flash backs about trying to milk and feed the cows during very cold weather

We were nearly finished extending and converting this house and living in it when beast from the east came in. We only had a heatpump for heating as log burner was not installed as we had not plastered the fire place or fitted the hearth!!! Two days without electricity resulted in a severely cold house and we got plastered, decorated and fitted a floor in lounge pretty sharpish after!!!

Thing is though, if we get a major snowfall now, farm equipment has moved on so much it will take no time to clear roads.
Took me 9hrs to go 3/4 mile after the beast from the east, road was level with the hedges, so had to dig in at an angle to get space to boom out and tip over hedge so it didn’t just fall back into road, had cattle and sheep to feed in sheds at another yard so had to get there

We have a massive V plough for those type of situations, we have never used it, in the 25+ years we've had it.
I remember my dad turning the bucket round on an old JCB and spending days digging us out, before the local quarry sent 2 big shovels, one pushing the other and everything was cleared in hours.

v plough wouldn’t have worked as it was over 12ft deep in places and no where to push it, there was 1 road 2 of us took turns driving in getting a bucket full and reversing out to be able to tip it somewhere, had to take it out in steps as too deep, some pics on here somewhere in a different thread

Only way to shift that quickly is by a blower and hope it compacts and doesn't blow back
