craft no tilled in October on clay, it looks okay. We tried a wider row spacing mag be too much (the gap on the left is the drill pulling to one side though). It’s had 110kgs N.

Winter barley in NE Scotland seems to be poor. Our was well established and came out of the winter looking the best probably ever seen it. Awns emerging but 10 days early. Just to dry to make use of nitrogen and aborted tillers I'll take 50% of last year's yield
thought NE scotland had had a decent bit of rain lately? what date should winter barley heads normally start appearing?

I wonder why I want to grow anything else!
Barley always looks wonderful in May with the awns blowing in he breeze, doesnt look so great in late June early July when the effing rooks are knocking it down and the pigeons are flying into it, luckily my stepson likes shooting so they will have some pain this time

Another sharp frost this morning . How will this effect the barley in ear. Haven’t yet sprayed the advised T2. Is it really needed with no rain forecast for at least two weeks .
What’s everyone else done/ doing

Haven't gone with t2 yet because of the low near freezing temperatures at night....not sure if this would affect it but I feel happier not doing it. I think mine is worth the t2 just as a bit of insurance and keep the head and top leaves clean.

White over here this morning . My emerging maize won’t be happy either

Think it was 1989 that there were -8 frosts in May that knackered all the barley, the days of Magie. Some recovery from secondary fillers, but not much, and then brown rust came in. Ours did 1.5ton/ac, lots around was silaged.

No the frost on the flowers! I know my grandfather lost some wheat that frosted when in flower but I have never herad of it in barley and it must be a more common occurance it being so much earlier. Does anyone know?
I've got some pictures somewhere of bind grain sights caused by a late from, 3 or 4per ear but only in the sheltered parts of the field.

Think it was 1989 . . . . . . did 1.5ton/ac
Did 1.4t/acre here in 1989, but still reckoning on beating that all-time low with up to 1.5t this time (which will give us 40% of last year).

:D :D

edit:- Shall know the worst in two month's time and it'll all be completely forgotten in four (except by the overdraft).
