Winter or spring barley…?

Just kicking some ideas around, I’d be thankful for your collective wisdom…

I’ve got a small patch of easy draining, sandy loam land, even after all this rain I could plough it, an afternoon of sunshine on it would dry it out lovely.

The plan was spring barley, but would I be of benefit sowing some winter barley in it now, rather than waiting until spring…?

I'd wait until spring and sow spring barley in this case but in land such as that you would be better sowing winter barley in the conventional timing and it would do well IME. Barley just doesn't like the mud like wheat does.

I’m not convinced, my winter barley has established far better than my winter wheat this year. All drilled in the same week of November into tricky conditions ( All DD )

I think that is just the way it goes sometimes. It's in the spring when it's trying to grow on it looks absolutely miserable whereas the wheat tends to stick it more readily.

Spring only option id say now where into the start of the year.
It wont yield as much as winter sown in sept but thats just sb for you.
Ive stopped growing it for them reasons

Gotta keep it cheap. Spring barley is a weed of a plant anyway.

If it is as light as the man says, and it will go (I assume he doesn't get much severe frost), I would go now.

Over at another pat of the empire, I've been doing a bit of ploughing today, and its ploughing surprisingly well, hopefully winter wheat going in next week....

Tardis WB Ploughed Early Oct from wheat Stubble & Combi Drilled the next day. Not Rolled nor Sprayed. Had TSP & shut gate for winter. Easiest Field here by miles. Free draining also.
