Wiring up a PIR light... electronics for dummies

On the outside of the house I have a light that is on a normal switch, what I would like to do is put up a light with a PIR but also be able to use the switch to turn it on and off.

Is it as simple as just wire up the new light in to the existing cable and it will work? I'm thinking not as it will need a permanent power feed even when the switch is off? Any help greatly appreciated... I hate electrics!

Ours are wired that you leave the switch on all the time for them to work as PIR. Think if you rock the switch off and on the light will stay on. If you switch it off it will stay off.
I think that only works if you do it in quick concession.

You should be able to wire it up the same @DieselRob but what do you mean permanent power, you want the pir to work even with the switch off?

Wire up new light to mains supply, just need to connect the incoming mains live to the live between the PIR and the bulb with an earthed switch in between.

Can you see somewhere to make a connection between the PIR and the bulb?
often a extra terminal on the block to connect multiple lamps together so if one PIR triggers, then all lights come on.

very simple, even i can do it, you could keep the existing light n add a pir but thats not quite so simple, im a bit confused as to why you want to switch if off, i never turn any pir lights off, otherwise they never come on when nedded

No I don't want the PIR to be turned off but I want the option to leave the light on permanently

Just change existing light. Leave switch on pir works. Flick switch 2 times on permanant. Switch off wait 15 secs bsck on bsck to pir

All the pir lights about the farm are like that, switched on and the pir sensor works them if you want it on permanent then switch it off and back on within 10 seconds, when done and wanting back to sensor switch it off leave 10 seconds and back on, now it'll work as a sensor light again
