Wood shavings for broiler chicks

Is there a better place to source wood shavings for our broiler chicks in the brooder? Currently buying at £10per bale retail, its a bit of a killer. Right now I'm thinking best plan would be to buy a couple pallet loads at the start of the year.
Thanks

Pine sawdust from your local sawmill is ideal. The pine oil acts as a disinfectant, and they dry out without caking. Not sure about hardwood, suppose it would work too. I used to take bags and fill them, or the trailer and they would dump a load in, then over the weighbridge. Was very cheap.
