Workshop lights

Evening All, my big yard project this year is to treat myself to a proper workshop, not just the corner of a shed.

Got the floor in hand - stone and concete - next thing todo is decent lights.

Want a good clear white bright light - LED's???

Anyone have any advice or links to suppliers?

Thanks.

I've just done a yard and shed and decided to give LED's a go and very impressed with them so far - they give instant bright white light. Used a couple of 30W for the yard and two 50W for inside a 60X40ft shed. Bought from tlc-direct.co.uk.

I would say either leds of some sort or twin strip lights, 1 in each bay down each side of apex, so 2 per bay, one each side if that makes sense, I find 4 fts good but personal preference you may prefer 5 or 6 ft and every other bay but wouldn't be much cheaper and you would get more shadow IMHO

I got a 400w metal halide for 99p local collection of eBay when i picked it up even had 20ft armoured cable on it, 1 end workshop now nice and bright other is in the shadows. If I lit that end up I would be able to see just how much sh1t is down there.

If its out like my workshop I spend more time just popping in and out for something than I do working in it so instant light is a must even if it just enough light to fine the 13mm spanner!!

I've just put fluorescents in my new cattle shed. There's 8 double 6' over 60' x 60' and that's plenty of light, and no shadows like floodlights.

With leds does anyone know the difference between cool and warm white, is there much and whats best for ag type applications?

Warm is more creamy in colour and similar to a normal bulb.

Cool is whiter and more like daylight but also looks a bit harsher.

Personally I'd go with warm for general lighting and cool in work areas where light levels are more important.

I have been told to avoid 6ft bulbs as they are expensive and don't like the damp. HF fluorescent are very good, low bays cheaper to run but slow to warm up. You can always have different lighting types on different switches, so if you are just popping in for a spanner you can have instant light.

This might help understand the difference, well in to the cool does tend to look somewhat blue.

Does not show here but the cold end would read around 6000 K, which is how some makers sell products.

In my garage at home I have 6 x 6ft fluorescent fittings with LED tubes installed, the light output is amazing. It did involve some alteration to the internal wiring of the fitting.
