Would I be mad to buy a Discovery 4

I suppose the eventual panacea will occur when all LR vehicles are battery powered and hence there is no engine with bearings or a crank to destroy. This should improve their reliability no end though it could be slightly undone by going back to a steel back door and neglecting to galvanize it before it's painted. Of course this will allow rapid oxidation to the point that the door falls off under heavy acceleration and the batteries powering it all fall out the back.

When we had a Disco4 it always felt like if you gave it the same work to do as the Ford Ranger it would just break, and that’s what it did! So wasn’t much of a weapon for me🤣
i had a ranger it it was terrible was an 05 pre facelift and i genuinely checked it was not leaking fuel it used so much!

your comparing apples with turds (with exception of the newest ranger i actually think that is a huge leap forward) you cant honestly say your ranger was as comfortable or towed as well as a d4

I wouldn't swap my 3.2 Wildtrak for one, having used both, the Ranger tows as well IMO and has been more dependable and just as comfortable. Between us my wife and I have had a Disco1,2, TD5 (my favourite), 3,4, a RR, Defender (original type),2x Freelander and for a few weeks wife had an Evoque. We still have a 10 year old Freelander Commercial with 120,000 miles on it and it's great. I'm sad that at the moment I wouldn't consider another LR product and genuinely hope that changes

Back on Topic, I’d also seriously consider a Disco 3. Far less likely to suffer Crankshaft failure.
It you block off the EGR (from 2007 will also need a remap) the engine power and economy will increase to somewhere between the D3 and D4 levels.

I’ve got a 2005 version and I prefer it to my 2010 3.0 RR Sport.
Not looking too bad for an 18 year old model!

2008 disco 3 here with 305000 miles on original gearbox and engine. getting to a stage its not worth spending money on as at that mileage anything major and its off the road. currently a sensor somewhere about the diff not reading right on right hand bends but by disabling the DSC it never throws a fault. Its really just a back up car and trailer donkey now, main trailer donkey s a 110 high capacity with the transit engine? well its on the second now at about 140000 miles only 3-4000 on the second engine.

Would say for pulling and handling a trailer there is nothing in it but for long trips the disco is nicer however i would hitch the trailer of the 110 for a long run to take the disco
