Yet another vegan observation

My daughter started her second year at college in Skye and was amazed to find that approx 1/2 of the first year students are vegan.... I pity the poor college cooks having to come up with that many vegan meals 3 times a day 7 days a week..meanwhile my daughter's favourite food remains homegrown mutton, roast potatoes and baby carrots.;)

Sabhal Mor Ostaig? It seemed to attract quite a few oddballs from my Glasgow uni course. Plenty of mature student types who covered their accommodation in prayer flags.

I hope she gets on well.

Cheers, she seemed to spend most of her first year having ceilidh's in the local pubs, shes bilingual and doing media but they do have their share of oddballs as the vegans testify

Why are vegans 'oddballs'? Just because they have taken a lifestyle choice that you wouldn't does not make them odd (and incidentally they are still customers of farmers whatever they eat). I really cannot understand the constant demonisation of one particular group in society because they do not wish to eat the food that you deem they should.

Surely that works both ways?
You won't find many omnivores breaking into vegan businesses and destroying their livelihood whilst spreading outright lies and bullsh1t propaganda to further their cause!

Demonisation ! A first world food fad, dreamt up by those who have not thought it through, copied by the self righteous to comply with peer pressure, I have never told anyone what to eat, unlike every vegan i've ever met

Veganism is extremism, full stop. The sooner it’s made clear that it’s both unsustainable and unethical, the better.
Be vegetarian by all means, whether it’s on emotional or taste/texture preference, but woe betide anyone who tries to tell me its on “ethical” grounds.
Do these people take medication of any kind when it’s needed? Of course they do. Were such medical products/treatments tested on animals? Of course they were.
And yet they won’t wear wool because it’s “cruel”, or eat honey thats “stolen” from bees?
Pull the other one!!

Just ask any vegan if they are a "level 5 vegan". That will give you a very good indication of how insane they are. :D

Veganism is very dangerous dietary habit, that should only be undertaken under proper supervision of a dietitian who will monitor your health and recommend suitable supplements to help compensate for a nutritionally deficient diet.

I was in my local pub recently having Sunday lunch. I was minding my own business when the waitress bet me she could get both of my spuds in her mouth at the same time.
She managed to do this which impressed everyone in the bar apart from my wife.

I mentioned this growing trend a while back and was dismissed by many. It's not something we can or should ignore. Within ten years, demand from agriculture will have completely changed from what we produce today and what we have traditionally supplied to the market. Especially so when the production of synthetic meat substitutes really takes off, probably in less than five year's time.

At that point, even ardent meat eaters are likely to substitute a substantial proportion of their consumption to meat-tasting substitutes. Combined with the likelihood of really cheap imports it is likely to transform the face and economics of UK agriculture completely. Not in a good way. This includes grain farming of course, because there will probably be very little demand for animal feed grain.

As for college cooks, that's easy. Baked beans. More baked beans and cabbage. Not sure what these would do for global warming but it would make for very windy student accommodation.

please tell us that was a euphemism.

The thing is, every argument used in favour of replacing meat with meat substitutes applies equally to everything else we eat. I have written to George on this and just yesterday chased him for his reply.

My daughter (as a vegan) started uni in autumn 18 in halls, she was the only one out of 13 in their section, so definitely not half there.
Also, regarding folk telling others what to eat, I have never heard my daughter tell anyone what they should eat but I regularly hear people telling my daughter what to eat (not myself or my wife I hasten to add)

Maybe food will be labelled as "This burger contains only 5% meat" as a selling point, like 5% fat, sugar, etc at present.
As far as my daughters college went, I understand they have put the vegans in self catering part of the accommodation

Nice to hear, my experience has been rather different, told within minutes of being introduced of their veganism, challenged as to why I raise lambs for slaughter and when trying to have a reasoned discussion am met with a complete inability to make rational arguments. Three parties which did not go well. Only other time was in Gregg's when I said I'd wait for the sausage roll to cook and turned down the vegan option. Unsolicited was chastised by a woman in a most aggressive and irrational manner. Eventually responded that her diet was obviously disagreeing with her was met with cheers from the queuing builders and she just screamed abuse at them. Took my sausage roll and made a quick exit.
