Getting quality likely the biggest problem, I normally go to timber merchants and pick the ones that are decent, or reject the ones which aren't.
Galvanised nails to fix, 3"+ length.
Last price I had about £1.10 metre.

We had some Yorkshire boarding done here quality wasn't great and they used 40mm Tek screws to fix to Z purlins looks ok now though

69p meter 22 x 150 treated C16 as part of full load orders use 65mm Galv clout nails to fix to timber rails or posi drive countersunk head tec screws to zeds but these must have the little snap wings on the side of the screws

Nail gun if you are on a price for somebody else, nails for yourself I'd say.
They do not nip the boards back to the cladding rails as tightly, but it is true, you can fire them on in a hurry.
