I still have the Charolais bull that's in my avatar he just turned 14 years old

Suckler cows here. Have culled, culled and culled over past 4 years. Calving replacements at 24 months. Oldest cow now 11 years, because she is one milky black lim. Always keep her heifer calves.
Average age of herd now 6.5 years.

Should have done this years ago!

Yes, I've got one special ewe that'll always come over to me and tell me things. I'll keep her till she can't cope and put her down on farm. I just couldn't take her to be culled.

She's useful as well, got her in with 200 fat lambs at the moment, and she will calm them down.

Funny, your wife said that she was keeping an old bull of a similar age for similar reasons

Lost one of the old guard to 'tb' in late May. Bought at a farm sale in Trelech as a second calver. Pre 1996 Br fr x Ayrshire. Was due to calve this month, negative for leisions and culture samples and older than the young vet that carried out the tb test.

Had an old North Country Mule back in the 90s. She had 19 lots of lambs and then was barren, so we culled her

Tend to not bull cows when they reach 10 plus as they start to look after themselves a bit more as they get into double figures

Our oldest cow was born June 2000.
She is our first 100 tonne cow & currently dry.
She may be in calf, we will have to wait & see, either way she will stay here until she dies & then she will be buried on the farm as a pet

Have a 1993 born cow on farm. That's the year I came up here so I keep her on for sentimental reasons she still has calves though they are below average these days!
