Too easily run over or picked up and stolen, and they tend to be pets.
Only want a yard dog that you are not afraid to loose surely, not a family pet.

yes im not so keen on german shepherds after been bitten twice by them! could do with a dog that will bark at an intruder but not actually bite!
Yes I agree and have already done some of the above but is the daytime that's the problem, security lights don't mean much then! I could close the yard gates but that would be a pita for everybody using the yard, but then leaving them open means would be theives can ride in and out willy nilly. My yard is right next to the roadside and a few houses look into it but noone would question them if there was someone in the yard. I'm thinking a dog on a long chain will be the answer
elkhound are like a lamb to the owner and have grate hearing and look bad when the van men come

Trouble with dogs is they can and do get poisoned, know of a friend who had this happen, not nice. Almost need a load of Guinea fowl, they'll be sure to let you know when anyone is about although they dont have much in the teeth department!

Yes but dead men tell no lies

Farming/road haulage business up here was sick of their diesel being stolen, so he and a couple of his lads waited for them one night, caught four of them red handed (literally) roughed them up a bit while restraining them, called the coppers, result the thieves walked while he and his lads got a caution for assault and illegal restraint, with the rider they weren't being charged only because the thieves wouldn't press charges.
Later being rather peed off at this treatment, he was heard to make a comment that the next time they would end up "deid and buried" where no one would ever find them, result? more heavy handed warnings from the plod.
In fairness, that was a few years ago and things have got a bit better but not a lot, the plod would still rather have the criminals in the sticks rather than thieving from posh estates.
