Which dog breed for a yard dog

Not read the thread, but depends what you want in a yard dog.

If you just want a noisy deterrent get a terrier or happy collie.

If you want a man stopper get an Alsatian or Malinois.

If you want an extremely useful tool, gets properly trained Alsation or Mal.

Basset hound.Bloody things lie around and sleep forever, usually somewhere an unsuspecting person will trip over the sods and do serious damage to themselves, and end up with a seriously pee'd off Basset hanging off their trouser leg because they've been woken up.Only ever wake up to pee,eat or roll in something long dead.Wife has one, which I'm more than happy to pass on............

My party piece as a drunken youth was to take on any dog that snarled at me.
My mates "guard" alsatian hid in it's kennel whenever it saw me, another mates rottweiler (biggest I have ever known) would steer clear of me but wasn't scared as such, dobermans were always too stupid to even understand the game.
Collies and Jack Russells are the ones that would bite.
If I wanted a scary dog in the yard it would be a ridgeback.

If you want a lunatic dog just put any breed you like on a chain. Usually messes the dog up imo but they usually look the part. (I also think it's a pretty cruel trick).
A good sensible dog of any breed is the real answer but finding someone that has bred a dog for sense is a task in itself.

Having been on trouble myself for my dog biting passers by on a public footpath I would warn against using guard dogs - there are too many laws against you. However, I don't remember any laws against geese??

Can you train them just to bite burglars though? Seriously, can you easily train to bite? With dogs I've had over the years,it seems to be either in there nature or not
In Southern Africa I've seen dogs trained to be aggressive towards a certain type of person. As youngsters they are regularly beaten by people of a particular hue and odour, and they end up with a very bad attitude, but not towards their owners, and similar people. (Have I been tactful enough there?!!)
