Which dog breed for a yard dog

Gotcha,
Yes I agree and have already done some of the above but is the daytime that's the problem, security lights don't mean much then! I could close the yard gates but that would be a pita for everybody using the yard, but then leaving them open means would be theives can ride in and out willy nilly. My yard is right next to the roadside and a few houses look into it but noone would question them if there was someone in the yard. I'm thinking a dog on a long chain will be the answer
Gotcha, putting a dog on a short chain attached to a wire rope running around your buildings should put of any pikeys from helping themselves, Belgium manwaras are nasty dogs which don't bark much, good video on youtube with the Belgium police using them, if your place is suitable you could install electric gates

put any dog on a chain and it becomes more vicious, the problems arrive when children enter your yard especially in this day and age, years ago no problem. If you only have one entry exit point then perhaps a barrier where they have to stop and press a button to let them through ( in or out )at which point your camera gets a good shot , .
Dogs are more suited to guarding premises with very few folk coming in and out , you cannot have a dog loose that will take grip of every one

+1 for the Dogs Trust or similar kennels. They really struggle to re-home big dogs generally. Particularly ones with a look of the scrapyard about them!(y)
That's what I could do with is a dog thats content laying in the yard, it would have to be on a long chain during the day but lose on a night. I'll check out the rescue dogs.
What's the downsides of a guard dog? I'm not quite convinced about having one yet
Just be careful with a rescue dog, as you don't know its history and whether its been abused, mum fetched a rescue dog when we were kids, it was nearly the end of all of us, total nutter.

I thought about electric gates but I don't have a spare £1000 pounds! And it is also a shared access that isn't used alot but most days. I'm not to keen on chaining a dog up but looks the only option

I have two GSDs off working lines (one in the avatar) so they don't suffer from the usual hip problems found in some pet lines. I also have two large signs up stating "Guard Dogs" which puts me in a difficult position if someone gets bitten, especially as one is being trained in protection! But they are never out of the kennel unless with me and I have been training dogs for over half a century so they are under perfect control.

I had a visit from the mobile community a couple of years ago. I explained to them that they could help me as the dogs were getting very bored with the padded suits. The word must have got around as I've had no more visits. Just having dogs that look the business in a kennel with the possibility that someone might emerge at any time to open the gate seems to be enough. Would you take that chance? You could always put up a sign saying the kennel gate can be opened remotely. Oh, and 'yes', the guy on the left really would like to bite someone, especially if they are carrying a clip board! :)

Incidentally, a Hungarian who was working for me said guard dogs are useless as they can be poisoned. He should know as he left with some of my tools!

An untrained guard dog on a chain is a dangerous liability as they get very territorial. That is why there is special legislation to cover that situation. Don't do it unless you want a free holiday at Her Majesty's pleasure!

If you must do it why not get a couple of terriers? They'll see most of the casual robbers off with may be a bit a leg flesh nipped. Defending that is far easier in court when compared to a bigger more powerful dog hanging off thier face!

German Shepard Collie cross, don't let him/her play, become familiar with anyone but yourself. They will have a grand life, plenty of attitude. The local pound might have something a bit to aggressive for the previous owner? But get a pup.

Local bloke uses a Rottweiler and its a bloody scary dog but soft as you like after 5 mins with it. Boss uses a border collie dog as guard dog and he is surprising good and barks and anyone other than who works on the farm. He makes a fair row

There is a difference between sentry dogs, which most of the discussion on here seems to be about, and family protection / protection dogs. Unless you really know what you are doing it is wise to stay away from dogs that bite, particularly big ones. Training a dog to bite is the easy part, getting it to stop on command is the hard bit.
A dog that looks the business and barks a lot will see all but the most determined off.
A dog that just goes for people is plain dangerous.

Belgian Shepherd (malinios) Dutch Hearders etc do not make good sentry dogs and do not do well left in a kennel. They have a very high drive and need an experienced owner.

A big mongrel gets my vote every time. By day they are fabulous and safe with everyone but at night time when the gates are shut then they switch to guard dog mode. Quite brilliant and great temperaments .
