Mole trapping is great fun and addictive,
When I have them set its the first job after letting the dogs out to check them.
If setting lots I would advise setting 5 at a time or 10 in an area so you know how many you are looking for, not 4 or 8.
Last autumn I got 17 moles in one field in a week.( 90 trap's though)
How many traps?Never have any problem with smell, just rub trap in mole hill and set. Put some traps down boxing day.View attachment 446690 These in less than 24 hours. 80 odd this month so far. Getting some more traps, teaching @landyman the art so should make um less
I bought a dozen tunnel traps from Amazon to replace some ageing ones, they came well made and needed no adjustment to function well straight out the box.
I used to wash my hands without soap and handle the traps like glass but now I finish my smoke, dig a hole, set them in firm and leave them till next day. The results are just the same. Shiny and new or dull and old makes no difference that I can tell.
The odd wee devil that backfills traps generally comes a cropper if I set two traps 18 inches apart with a freshly dead mole from another run in between.
It's definitely addictive. Knowing you have your own traps that cost less than a visit from the mole man and you have them for keeps makes it seem a worthwhile pastime on a quiet afternoon.

Moles are digger like hells at the moment. Is there any other way to kill them apart from traps. A see you can get poisons and smokes. Are they any good. Or should I cough up and pay the mole boys.
Use the T handle of a spade to firm the bottom of a run and set trap down on to the run floor at a slightly rotated angle and it's very rare for them to earth a trap in if the bottom of the run is clean and firm.Had one wrecking havoc on the lawn in run up to Christmas. Set two, both filled, then too busy to reset, set a third Christmas eve and clear since. Key seems to be getting the right runs and was easier once we had a few more hills. I use a stake to find the runs.
We have a few out in the fields but I see the odd dead one lying about dead so no sure if Owls or cats getting them.
