I've never had a problem bidding on cattle against the old boys, I think that's complete rubbish. Dealers spending other people's money a different matter.

Dealers put £100 head on the store price for cattle, 18 or so months ago at sedge it was a red hot trade every week for stirks, one week and for that week only trade dropped £100 head, reason was that none of the dealers had orders for cattle..

Amazing that so many farmers use dealers to buy cattle instead of going and doing it themselves.

a dealer buying with multiple accounts would keep the price down compared to all the farmers they have accounts for turning up an bidding

Sold some store cattle from my suckler herd few days ago, Shorthorns crossed with a Blonde Bull.

11 months old, no additional feed just hay and mothers milk.

2 heifers nothing special £535 each
3 nice heifers £570 each
1 bull made £700

I was disappointed with the prices of the heifers, or does that seem about right?

There's little doubt some firms have more flexible buying terms - ie if you can supply so many in spec cattle a week we'll give you so much extra.

It makes some sense as procurement costs are less and there's less out of spec meat to sell/use.

But I doubt anyone is getting 30p/kg more.
