What do you do when a Pikey drives on the yard?

Those of you that are taking number plates down, you do realise that most of them are false anyway?;)

My cunning plan is to never have anything worth nicking.:(

We had some on the yard one day , I reported the vehicle & reg number which all matched up . A few months later I got a call from South Yorkshire Police to say it had been on false plates & would I try & identify the driver in an identity parade . Rightly or wrongly I politely declined their offer .

It never surprises me on how much of the local area and people they know. We have the "Would you be interested in a diesel generator" brigade turn up around here around the same time every year, "I can be doing you a good deal as we're backon the boat tonight and I don't want to be taking them home". This year they spotted my motor and followed me into Aldi carpark, last year they called round at my house, that's the second year as they pulled up the year before saying that I might be interested as a mate of mine had said where I lived, I know damned well that he hadn't.
Nearly all of my contacts in the local Land Rover Club were called upon as well which by far was too much of a coincidence and it wasn't as if all of these people are linked by any one thing such as Farcebook as I'd suspected as there's the odd ones not on there. Give them their due, they do know where to find their "target audience"

The last white Transit pick up that called here left his business card which had the name of a genuine auctioneer based a few miles away. They were doing a special auction for used batteries, oh and any old metal gates if they were cluttering the place up. When questioned about his bona fides, chap reckoned he had worked with several of the experts from "Bargain Hunt".

More than likely he just either said or spelt the last word wrongly

We've just got a normal set of gates with a throw over catch, no locks or anything but an obvious cctv camera pointing at the gate.

They don't seem to like to get out of the car/van to open the gate or walk up the drive past the camera.

Just make sure you put an ir flood light next to the camera as they have been known to drive round at night with night vision scope or similar looking for soft targets.

Insurance companies should really be offering discounts to farms that take precautions such as controlled access etc IMO - would go some way toward covering the cost and it must reduce risk surely ?

When I first got my cctv cameras on my yard I mentioned it to the NFU rep hoping I might get a discount.

His response was “we might need to increase the police to cover the cameras”!!!!

They don’t insure us anymore.

1 legal taxed and mot'ed white transit van but trouble is they got numerous on the same allegedly!
Many years ago working at a Bedford main dealer, they would come in and pay cash for a new wagon, in those days you had a free service at 500 miles which included an oil change. One day one turned up for a first service (not bought from us) foreman was a bit suspicious as the wagon looked as though it had done more than 500 miles, he checked up with Bedford and after checking chassis numbers etc, it had already had more than 1 first service. Turned out they had a spare speedo head with about 500 miles on it which they were using for free services.

They can be latched open on busy days by sending a text , but pressing a button or dialling a number when half way up farm drive means they are open when you get there and isn’t really a lot of effort

Anyone who needs legitimate access like employees, agronomist etc all get the number so they can dial themselves in - you can restrict hours or remove permissions and check logs to see who came and went when if you have need to do so

Makes the yard feel 1000% more secure - seems mad they were ever open and anyone could drive or wander around our yard in the past now
Yes, but in the past , farm yards actually had a farmer, some workers and a wife to keep an eye out.

we have a decent enough lad around here, calls once a year and might buy a few small bits off him. if anyone else calls in, " sorry lads do all my dealings with blackie connors" not much they can say to that. it's a good way of doing things especially if he's a big lad, the others won't dare stand on his toes.
