Why do shares have the notch/wing when viewed from above? I have seen plenty of flash looking rear shares that the Ransomes boys fit to do their 2nd run and also their finish run, why do we not infill these notches/wings and use them all the time not just the 2nd and last run?
The notch/wing provides what? lift the soil slightly to then guide it up the board? It obviously cuts/shears the soil to provide the upper face of the furrow slice and leave the furrow bottom in a certain state and also gives us the hinge about which the slice rotates but the gap behind the wing does what? Nothing in my simple view?
Also do some of these modified shares have a plate underneath to smooth the furrow bottom on the 2nd run and also the finish as having kept an eye of some people whilst ploughing and their mid work furrow bottoms are not polished like their finish or 2nd run. Obviously soil type has a bearing on this to a degree and running the plough on it's tail/less pitch on the point would affect this also.
Photo of an insert I am doing for mine.
