Use Milwaukee cordless and 20mm auger bit. But also have an inverter that I can power corded drill with off truck battery.

Have used a Hitachi 18v cordless for 6-7 years drilling mainly telegraph / electric poles for gateposts , it finally gave up and died on me a few weeks back , replaced it with the new Hitachi brushless drill , got a lot more torque, you need a good auger bit to ease the strain on the drill really,

I use auger bits, works fine. Needs a good drill though as the bigger ones do make it cough.

Used to use flat bits, but they had a tendency to wander about off line and leave you with a wobbly hole I found.
They work but an auger is neater.

Proper old auger bit rather than modern Chinesium stuff makes a huge difference - I inherited a load & even the blunt/rusty ones cut better than most modern bits. A few weeks back I put a 3/4 hole the long way through a sleeper using a hand brace without breaking a sweat! I think that modern bits don't have the right profile on the cutting edges, the cutting reliefs and flute forms also just don't seem to match up to the old. I reckon that it's because the manufacturers assume the drill will make up for the deficiencies in the bit.

My dads got some rusty old augers and they’re relatively easy with the hand drill then he’s bought some new bits to try with our makita drill and generator but they just stall the generator
Which is why I made this thread
