What’s the best (cheapest) drill for gate hanging iron holes?

Unless your doing a lot id stick with the hand drill. By the time youve started the generator or faffed about finding a charged battery becsuse rhe one you tske is inevitably flat you will have done it with a hand drill.
Dad showed me how to sharpen the bits it made a hell of a difference

We use a 1/2 inch Metabo cordless impact wrench. Found augers were hard on cordless drill. We get Milwaukee augers designed for impact guns. Will drive straight through 15" post in no time.

Surprised the impact doesn't blunt the wings of the auger bit. Good idea though

Use an airline drill, but you do need a tractor with air. Handy though because it powers other tools as well.

I use an auger bit in my sds makita because it has a bit more grunt than my battery drill.
Could do with a longer sds auger bit though if anyone knows where to go for a decent one.

20mm auger bit dewalt 18v drill. Flies through softwood posts. Done a few oaks recently . Plenty of wd40 and pull the bit out often enough to clean while drilling. Wouldn't last long if we a daily occurrence

just weld a bit of bar on to bit, have it whatever lenth you need

If the post is too wide for the auger bit, I just finish it with this.

Weld an ordinary 5/16 drill to a 15" length of 3/8 rod to make an 18" drill. When you run out of depth with the auger, just continue with the long drill until it goes through. Then continue with the auger from the "other" side.

The trouble with drilling a pilot hole all the way through is that an auger would be ineffective afterwards as it will have a screw point to pull it in and keep it on line.

Ah - that's why you use a smallish drill so the auger has something to work with, but unless you are using oak trunks as gateposts, you can push the auger through 4-6" of wood quite well - it will tend to follow the pilot hole.

makita cordless with 19mm (keeps fitting tight) flat wood with extension drill works spot on, auger its take alot of power to go through

Auger bit will pee through with a good dab of grease/oil or liberal wd-40 or similar

I use my dewalt 1/2 impact gun its easy most wood bits have a hex end that is 8mm i have a 8mm impact socket so fitted the two together with a grub screw to hold it in and never had it refuse to go through a post
