Was quite unusual to find a brown and white belted Galloway this morning, even more so when a second one popped out, black and white this time

Yep correct.
That is a spur. Ring main track will be wide enough and deep enough to take wheeled traffic.
6 mile haul of own stone. 5 dump trailers 14 tonner digging and loading. 8 tonner making tracks.
Sounds expensive! We were lucky in having hard slate stone and soft sandstone on farm.:)
