You lot that know more about these tractors, are they positive ground or negative ground? Doesn't have a battery in at the moment and don't want to blow something up. I recall something like they have positive ground?

I see that's a 4 cylinder! Good luck on the starting. Some were good starters, some weren't. A big capacity battery such as a 642 and either a starter from a Ford 4000(think it fits) or preferably a geared Iskra/Letrika starter to get more speed would be preferable. Make sure the heater plug is working and if it's still hard to start it may have a worn timing chain tensioner, chain, rings and so on. Getting the injection timing spot on is critical. If everything in these engines isn't just right they will crank over forever and usually end up with a squirt(or a tin) of Easystart, which just eventually makes them worse, or else a tow start.

Not my tractor (luckily), just getting it running again for the landlord. And according to him this one is already addicted to easystart.

Battery leads usually only fit whatever way round it is.

Used to be fancy ways to change polarity, live wire on the dynamo for 10 seconds & all that, got an autospark to do one once & he just turned the battery round & put new ends on the leads.....

Not much left of the ends on the leads that's why I just wanted to make sure.

the tractor looks in good condition... because of dry climate!! there are ways of making it start good but if addicted to easystart other than keep using easy start or what a military trained mechanic told me once was turn engine over on starter for about 5 seconds with stop out to warm cylinders … I have never tried it but it makes sense... also if you fit new starter do not throw away old starter as a lot of new starters are poor quality and do not last.. is it breathing heavy ??? if it is then tell your landlord to overhaul engine and fit glow plugs in head then it will start perfect

Remove the head, open out the combustion chamber throats, and the starting will be transformed! In the case of a known grey and gold, from "eventually" to instant, even after sitting unused for several months.

there is a local guy who does this and he fills the piston chamber with weld

No need to bother with the weld, and in my view a silly thing to do, just raises the bmef above safe limits once the engine is running.
