What seed rate?

I'm starting at 280 seeds/m2 in late September and rising by at least 25 seeds/m2 every week after that. This in light land where establishment is higher than really heavy clay. Variable rate seed, though this doesn't affect the average rate when booking the seed in June/July based on seeds not kg.
You’d get it in much quicker if you didn’t mess about counting all the seeds

seed rate (seeds/m2) divided by 1000, the multiplied by the TGW, and then multiplied by 10 to get kg/ha

eg. (250 / 1000) x 55 x 10 = 138 kg/ha

if you need 350kg/ha then you need to question why you are growing wheat on that land anyway.

Because seed is one of the cheapest inputs you can buy, and high seed rates on poor textured land works a treat. I sow the good bits at 300 seeds m/2 (180kg ish), and the stuff "harder than a hoors heart" at 450 seeds m/2 (270kg plus).

Tried dropping the rate on the good land (robbing Peter to pay Paul), but soon learned that low rates don't work if you get (another) a crappy Spring.

I fall down on estimating % establishment which can be anything between 60 and 90% hence I go with 200kg/ha which works here in October. Too much for September on our ground IMO.

1.5 cwt acre of Red Lammas going in the first week of September. Was bred long before anyone had heard of metric and definitely wouldn't grow in hectares and kilos. it would probably prefer Groats to the Perch or whatever was current in the 16th century. It also doesn't realise that black grass is competitive, it reckons it's a bit of a girl's blouse really so quite useful for early planting.

In your situation I can see how that works. Similar logic down here, too, being on similarly unkind soils. I used to say 300 seeds as a starter, 325 if middle of September, 375 if early October and ramp up from there. 400-425 seeds behind maize was not uncommon.

Good point, I forgot to add in % germination and %establishment (or field losses)

((Seeds per m2 target population x TGW) / % germination) x (100/(100-field loss))

eg.
((250 x 55) / 95) x 100/(100-10))
(13750 / 95) x (100/90)
144.7 x 1.11
160.6 kg/ha

PS. there are many online and phone apps which can do the calculations for you

I am convinced it was generally a mistake following advice on dropping seed rates in the 90s and 00s. We are now back up to 'undredweight an arf' (187kg/ha) or more, and of course back to October drilling.
As far as VR seeding goes, it is very much a matter of decision on the day. Sometimes the rate needs varying more than other times, and it needs to vary more than you think, between fields and within fields.

IMO it is as important to vary between fields and blocks as within fields/blocks.
