what news of stocks of wheat and barley? it sounds like barley is not abundant, in my area anyway

Plenty of wheat around now that 2 million tonnes of domestic consumption is going offline shortly with the loss of Vivergo, Ensus and Ranks at Southampton. We're not cheap enough to export either.

I think barley is tighter.

Surly our feed mills will have to use more wheat now vivergo is closed ? I think 70 -80% of by Product is used for feed. I know we move a lot down south.

short/mid term weve not taken into account the amount of grain either wheat or maize that both plants up here have been importing, there is also the by product ( distillers) going into the feed market whichwill soon disapear to account for. , right now we have a movement problem as some me included had planned to let grain go as needed either by them or cashflow. Now that market has gone but the feed market is still there and by all accounts stronger than it has been in terms of demand, despite what some are saying we had very little carryover stocks and harvest whilst not as poor as some forecast is certainly lower.(It could be that the lower harvest and reduced bioethanol market imports will show up as a deficit)As for international northern hemisphere export trade its too soon to call as winter demand and final harvest yield has yet to filter through esp in eastern europe.a bigger problem going forward is the amount of wheat crops emerging that look fantastic dont think weve got a sq ft missing or poor and others look as well or even better up here.and thats without trying to work out what will happen come march and beyond

The byproduct is used for protein in rations, so won't be replaced by straight wheat. There's also the loss of the 'liquid', which is another protein loss. Most likely result is increased soya import and surplus wheat to market.

I think you're on the right line of thinking, Vivergo were shipping wheat in from abroad around harvest time. So no, I don't think they have being using 2 million tonnes of UK wheat.

What I do know is that the heap of grain in my shed is a fair bit smaller than normal, and it's going down faster than normal because we're having to feed it to replace hay/silage.

feed mills are running at 10%+ higher output than average year to make up for forage shortage, that will knock a fair hole in the ethanol pile, I don't know anyone with a mountain of barley, my personal opinion is prices are under pressure from selling into bad/no news and people needing cash flow

there are some really good looking crops coming out the ground down here for next years prospects though

Mono gastrics (pigs & poultry) need a certain amount of cereal in their diet. IIRC some has to be barley as it has a dietary enzyme nothing else does. For polygastrics there are no such limitations - as long as it has the right energy, protein etc any ingredients can be used.

Same here, pellow.

Nothing's ever been better, hereabouts, for one's succeeding crops than a real good drought.

And, in my experience, yields always tend to balance out, year on year.

This will mean us having to average just over 11.2t/hectare in 2019.

That's 1.4mmt/year

Can't find a more exact tonnage for Southampton but it's more than 100,000t/year

Ok, perhaps not a full 2mmt and I don't have access to figures from how much was imported but enough to create the need for an alternative market or extra exports.

Will have to use more? They will use what they need to and what is priced the best, as they have always done. I agree that forage stocks are low & more bought in feed will be needed to fill the gap.

There was a bumper harvest in prospect in 2012....
Don't know about elsewhere but ponds are all still bone dry here.

76 was a breeze compared to this year here. I’ve got streams and ponds that flowed right through 76 that the are still dry now.

Autumn grass growth is still struggling. But autumn crops have gone in well and this weekends weather has been very welcome.
