either of them could fall - all would die

the reason doesn’t make it any more “clever”
It’s the way it’s done that makes it clever them kids climb up a structure like a ladder to make a video, Fred uses his experience and knowledge to fix his ladders in a safe way so he doesn’t die, he works his way up to do a job it was a skilled occupation not a idiot looking for internet fame like the people your comparing him too

He was an enormously skilled bloke not only doing his climbing but as an engineer too, what he did was no different than climbing a mountain they dont use HSE they use skill and years of learning from others, the thing about those that are really skilled at whatever they do is they make it look easy.
I have seen north american indians etc walking across beams many storeys up without any bother.

I remember Fred was at the vintage rally at Shrewsbury and there was a queue waiting to buy his book but by the time I got to the front the book was sold out and there was a considerable queue waiting so his wife said put your name and address in the book and pay then I would receive my signed book in about a month
After 5 weeks my book had not arrived so I phoned up one night and Fred answered and I had quite a long talk and he said if I am ever up in his part of the world I would be very welcome to call in but I never did
I had his phone number from the receipt and the book arrived within a few days
Does anyone know where his engines are now??
There's was a sale from his house last year but i think the engines were already gone. Some chap bought the house and contents and tried to raffle off the house,

We had all of Fred on VHS, when the machine died it didn't get replaced, passed them on to dad,hr must have given them someone else or my sister threw them out in one of her purges, they weren't there when we cleared the house earlier in the year.

“clever” would be to simply tie a safety rope around you !

Impressive / skilled as he is he’s not “clever”
