Beef / Lamb & Pig Price Tracker

It would be interesting to know if that’s actually true, or a ‘GUTH fact’.

Within a couple of posts on here, it’s already gone from a ‘rumour’ to being accepted as a fact.

Agree it’s the last thing the trade needs just now, IF it’s true.
A local dealer told me about it

Trouble is this time of year hoggets motor and getting to 50 kilos
plus wont be hard.
Last time there were too many heavy hoggets they were heavily discounted.

I agree, depending on the genetics of course. Progeny of big Tups on big ewes, fed all winter, will certainly get some size on them, and likely still need to go on hoppers to get them finished.
It still doesn’t make them in spec, or what any of the retailers want.

funny though they are out of spec but always come to more money, ppk doesn’t tell a full story, it’s the same with cattle. A lot depends what you are paying for the stores. In my experience some of those bigger white faced lambs are easier finishing that a lot else, depends on how much mule is in them.

I think @Smith31 is just winding some of us up on here. I know fine well that a lot of the ethnic trade is sheep meat and their buyers have told me on numerous occasions that if they couldn’t get it they would be looking at calves to replace it mainly due to price if it was too high. Not chicken! If they were going to eat bloody chicken they could have filled their boots with it years ago a million times over, not waited till now!

Chicken is more popular then red meat always has been especially the take away trade, look at all the fried chicken shops how many fried lamb shops are there? With the likes of McDonalds shutting there is a surplus of mince, the ethnic trade is a big consumer of mince.

I may be completely wrong, ewes may be £250 again at ramadan. However there is alot of surplus beef in the marketplace, it has to go somewhere has it not?

Come on now let’s talk some sense here!
It’s been obvious for many years now that there would be no reasonable sheep trade without the ethnic trade to but a bottom in things. You are only jumping to conclusions that they will switch to beef now. Why would they do that? It’s much cheaper now! They paid more for sheep meat last year and it was still much dearer than mincing beef then? Why would they? No one has suggested culls would be back to £250 either! They like lamb and it’s part of their religion.

GUTH & Smith31 as captains on each panel ..... or would they be 'The 2 Ronnies '

We do kill quite a few ewes and lambs so can tell by the order book what demand is like, got it spectacularly wrong last Thursday with live purchases mind, with the price crash on Monday.

We have had boxes of beef dropped off at some of our ewe meat customers around London today, which is good quality clean beef ready to mince, which would have previously gone to the restaurant trade, so it will result in less ewe meat demand early next week from us. Surely if it continues it will not do the price of hoggs and ewes any favours?

Could I stress once again that I may be completely wrong and live prices may break all records next week and I hope they do.

Come on, were the schools, McDonalds and every other restaurant in the country closed last year? What are farmers going to do with culls send them off with the knackerman? All that beef has to go somewhere

A couple of snippets from the Farmstock Scotland which may be of interest: Social distancing requirements are having a particularly large impact on chicken production which may in turn help beef (also pork?). I was hoping that Ramadan and Easter would help they sheep trade but they point out that social distancing may well have a negative impact there :(.

And you say that they are going to switch to it just like that they will automatically forget about eating lamb/Hogg/ewe which is cheaper than last year incidentally!
Where have all of these McDonald’s eaters and restaurant frequenters gone to then?
Have they just disappeared? Or do you think they’ve stopped eating? Where do people go when the pubs are shut for a drink?
Garden most folks have one. Barbecue? What goes on a barbecue? ? Beefburgers!!

The good news is that the small abattoirs are working to capacity. Our local place has gone from 3 days a week to 5 and are already booked out for next week. I could only get 20 hoggets in today but am anticipating needing over 50 again next week.

My neighbour has taken 6 cattle in this week and butchers wanted 8!
Look the supply chain is changing and all our local shops and butchers are now delivering to people. This actually means they order more and don't ask the price. They are pleased to get the food.

A little more positive thinking on here would be good. Forget bloody Tesco and NZ lamb and think of all the good things that will come out of this situation. I am convinced that local supply/demand is here to stay.

Highland Meats down 5p for Scotch and 20p for cows next week. 70 staff down in boning hall and can't process what's already in chills fast enough so cutting kill numbers. Told them to cancel my load for next week and I hope others do the same but suspect will take more than one week to recover.
