Who’s buying gear ?

Dealers workshops are full of newer end of kit knackered .

Its come to a point now where all the older basic tractors are rare as hens teeth or have been exported, so anything you purchase needs a laptop plugging into it.

Besides just because kit is older doesnt make it any cheaper to repair or run. Independent fitters working out of vans are touching £50 an hour.

Sorry by the time travel time is added the rates are touching £50 an hour, if you have workshop facilities, the time and are handy with spanners then yes older kit will work for you, every business is different.

ex Contract hire and the like...

Heard the tale from a mechanic of one local company who shall both remain anonymous, of a Contractor whose staff were fundamentally incapable of looking after Tractors. Said tractors came back into the system after 2-3 years, totally shagged in many cases. The Dealer moved them on rather than put their name to the kit...

The graveyards are full of farmers who struggled with poor kit, if a piece of kit can make my life easier and less stressful as long as I can afford it, I buy it. Farm kit will always be a better investment in comparison to fast cars and fast women;)
I get this, 1 wide new drill that costs more to start with, that only needs 2 people to keep it going (1 on loader) is cheaper than paying extra people to run 2 smaller older drills in the long run. Full time staff are definitely more expensive than kit.

I have found that our kit never moans, is never on snapchat, never late and has never left me to work for someone else during harvest;)

This year has seen a big switch from doing 2500ac of work, to 260ac of work which I now have someone else come to drill and fetch in.

There are better farm investments that are still tax efficient that are better than stuff with an engine for me. Was paying close to £20 an acre to insure the nice shiney gear that was likely to do under 100 hours work each. In any case, my local dealer always has a yard full of second hand crawlers I can hire for a week or two if needed.

I'm led to believe any shocking tax I pay can always be got back next year with a suitably meaty purchase.

If you were going to pick a year to drop that amount of work this was probably it. Do you pick lottery numbers? :)

Why on earth would you waste time and money looking after something on contract hire? Hire the smallest model you can get away with put some wild, cheap, "Grassmen style" pilots on them and crack on.
The bit that amazes me is people buying ex hire tractors, thinking they've bought a bargin.

:(

If the Order was submitted in last tax year, you should be able to have pushed a purchase back...?
Not from a tax point if view, as things stand at the moment my accountant says it has to be available for use in the tax year its tax relief is claimed, however my thoughts are as long as the paper trail is correct who can argue.
