Doing some ear counts this morning, indications are quite encouraging, Basset drilled 22/10
The rain came just in time, a few patches were starting to go off, but most is hanging on well

Spotlight looking better than Skyscraper here at the moment although it’s not supposed to do as well north of the border. Will be interesting come harvest to find out.

Istabraq still got quite a following up here, particularly in Fife.
Always found it a bit hit & miss myself. Some years 4t/acre others 2.75t. Maybe just didn’t suit the farm

Did some crop judging for a farms comp last week. 25 fields of wheat in a 20 mile radius. I did not see 1 ‘excellent’ crop and to be honest struggled to grade any as ‘good’ either. From the car everything looked decent but walking into them and it was all the same, short straw, 1/2 to 3/4 formed heads, partial blind sites, spindly and what looks like going to be smaller than normal seed size but that is just a guess presently. I got given print outs of a brief history on variety, date sown and husbandry since and I can tell you that those sown in September look no different to those sown in January. Honestly I’d be amazed if any of them did over 3t/acre grain and 1t/acre straw. I’d say the reality is more like 2t grain and 0.5t straw.

Back into the same area next week doing spring wheat so we’ll see what that shows.

Not to let the side down, but I'd say there are a few good to excellent crops around this neck of the woods, and that is from a fairly dire outlook a month ago.
My neighbour planted wheat very late, in March, and frankly I was expecting very little, was expecting Skyfall but no awns so probably Belepi?. It is all out in ear this week and I'd say looks "normal" crop.

Have you walked into it for a proper look? I’ve been judging crops for nearly 20 years and the 2012 crops were a lot better than what I’ve seen this year. To be honest picking the top 3 was nigh on impossible so I just picked them randomly in the end. Just to point out my crops at home are just the same so it’s nothing the farmers have done. The weathers beaten us all.
